I gave up shopping for a year and it changed my life
Because now is the time to Slowette Down...
Giving up shopping is not all that Slowette is about, but it’s how it started. I was a fashion editor for over 12 years, and I also shopped WAY too much. In 2019, I realised that my fast fashion habits AND my career were contributing to the climate crisis, so I decided to give up both. I bought no new clothes for a year, while pivoting my career to only work with brands that fitted with my ethos.
Fast forward five years, and I now work exclusively in the field of slow fashion and sustainable style, and I haven’t shopped on the high street since either, instead embracing independent responsible brands and second hand. Slowette is a platform for passing on what I’ve learnt in that time, from the fabrics to avoid (and embrace!) and brilliant brands to buy from, to Slow Coaching advice on shopping your own wardrobe, I’m here to help.
Switch to a slow fashion lifestyle, and you’ll never look back
Our insatiable appetite for fast fashion is killing the planet and exploiting people, but it doesn’t have to be that way. There are so many brands doing things better, but they’re usually small, independents that really need our support if they’re going to survive. Slowette shines a light on these companies; in my experience, it’s much more rewarding to buy clothes when you know where they were made and by someone who made a good wage in safe working conditions to boot.
Slowette also champions shopping preloved, cherishing your own wardrobe, experimenting with what you already have and rewearing pieces for years and years.
#slowettedown
Join the Slowette community and tell the stories of your own clothes. Big up a local brand that makes-to-order in your hometown, or tell us about your favourite heirloom piece in your wardrobe (mine is a hand knitted tank top that a lady called Mrs Neat made for my dad in the 1970s). Boast about your second hand finds, and give us an insight into just how many weddings you’ve worn that favourite dress to. If you’re into slow fashion, we want to hear about it.
